It can be tough to navigate your child’s birthday if your budget is tight. You want to give them the best, but it’s not always easy to splash the cash if you’re living month-to-month. It can leave you feeling emotional and disappointed.
It doesn’t have to, though. You can still deliver a magical day for your little ones without breaking the bank.
Firstly, it can be useful to gently set expectations. If your child has asked for the latest video game or toy that’s popular online, it is probably best to let them know in advance that they won’t be getting it. This prevents disappointment on the day itself. Instead, you can tell them they will have a super day!
Here are some practical tips for the day itself:
Check online marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace or Freecycle where people list cheap or free used goods that you can pick up locally. There can be some incredible hidden gems here!
Check out local children’s centres – some offer lending libraries for equipment such as ball pits and soft play equipment that you can hire for weeks at a time. Activities such as this can create a truly special environment for your little one’s big day.
Discount stores and supermarkets sell balloons and banners for affordable prices. Just a small amount can turn your home into a birthday grotto!
Scavenger Hunts – If the weather permits it, take your little one outside to a local park. Give them a list of things to find (an oddly shaped leaf, a big bird) and tick them off the list. Once everything has been located, they get a reward. It doesn’t need to be a big present; the hunt itself is the treat.
It might seem as though hiring a venue such as a hall is the only way to throw a party, but it really doesn’t need to be. If the weather is good, take some blankets to a park and let the kids play. Host it at your home (and host it after lunchtime so there is no expectation to feed lots of children). Ask your local library if they can offer space there. The possibilities are endless, and it doesn’t have to cost you a penny!
There is no need to spend big on your child’s birthday cake. You can buy inexpensive cakes from supermarkets and they are as delicious as any from a high-end bakery. Trust me, I’ve tried a lot of shop-bought cakes! Your child won’t care where it has been bought, or how much you paid. They will simply appreciate how tasty it is. That’s all that matters.
It is important to remember that children respond more to what is happening around them, rather than ‘things’. Shower your child with love. Give them your all. Love is more important than money, any day of the year. Embrace that, and you will never feel upset about not buying that popular video game again.
