We all know how hard it is to take care of others. These might be your children, parents or even siblings. Dealing with sickness and making sure everyone has what they need can be a lot of work, so remember to take care of yourself, too. In this article, I am going to share some ideas to help you understand why self-care is so important for your well-being.
Ask for Help
First and foremost, you shouldn’t do this alone. I understand this isn’t something everyone can do, but asking for help is always a great idea. It takes a lot of physical and emotional weight off your shoulders. If you have friends, relatives or neighbours you believe would like to give you a hand, don’t be afraid to ask them. Give them specific jobs when they ask how they can assist. Remember, asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a realisation that you don’t have to do everything on your own.
Setting boundaries
This is important because, as a caregiver, others expect you to meet every need and do it all. However, not everything is an emergency. You need to set some clear boundaries so others can learn to do things on their own. So, what you can do is start saying NO to things that can be done by someone else and don’t feel guilty about it. This action is going to give you more time for yourself to relax. Take some long and quiet walks, do deep-breathing exercises or, if possible, start a hobby.
Support your mental and physical health
You need to look after your health first, before everyone else. Make sure you eat nutritious meals, stay hydrated and sleep enough during the night or take regular naps during the daytime if your sleep is being interrupted. Additionally, don’t forget to keep your appointments. Attend medical checkups and screenings, and if you feel your health is being challenged, schedule a visit with your doctor as soon as possible.
As for your mental health, doing things for yourself can boost your mood greatly. Another option is definitely therapy, but I understand that not everyone has the time and money for therapy. Hence, a great alternative is to find support groups and communities that can help you.
Remember. It is a big deal to look after yourself while looking after others.
